CHS, the Canadian Hydrographic Service, is the agency that manages the charting of Canada’s waterways. Founded in 1883 in response to the loss of the SS Asia, CHS was originally named the Georgian Bay Survey. As its duties expanded, the survey began to cover areas long the Pacific Coast, and eventually the Atlantic and Arctic coastlines as well as interior waterways.
